| Abstract | China is the first producer and the first consumer of bicycles in the world. The bicycle fleet in Middle Empire is estimated around 500 millions units. The relationship between bicycle and China comes within a rapid transition in the Chinese society. In this article, we propose an interpretation of bicycle history in China from maoist period until now. During maoist era, bicycle was proletarian. During 1980s, it went with improvement of living condition. During 1990s, it was chased by automobile. Since 2000s, automobile congestion is a problem in Chinese cities and bike could be called for help to put harmonious development on tracks. |
