| Abstract | The object of this paper is to explore a series of inter-related questions. First, it is to assess the impact of trade liberalization on employment and wages in South Africa. Second, to the extent that a positive or negative impact is discernable, to assess the implications for labour law, as a system of rules that seeks to regulate the employment relationship, and how wages are determined. There is an associated question that also arises in considering these questions: what are the implications of trade liberalization for any endeavour to reduce the inequalities in the society as a whole, which some would regard as implicit in labour law’s mission. |
