Abstract	Introducao: A Pneumonia Associada a Ventilacao Mecânica (PAVM) e aquela que se inicia apos as primeiras 48 horas da ventilacao mecânica ou 48 horas apos a extubacao. E uma das infeccoes hospitalares mais incidentes nas unidades de terapia intensiva, com taxas que variam de 9 a 40% das infeccoes adquiridas nessas unidades, estando associada a um aumento da hospitalizacao e indices de morbimortalidade. Objetivo: Descrever atraves da revisao sistematica a importância da higiene oral na prevencao da pneumonia associada a ventilacao mecânica em unidades de terapia intensiva. Metodologia: Trata-se de uma revisao sistematica realizada com artigos originais, disponiveis na integra, publicados entre os anos de 2004 e 2014 nas bases de dados Scientific Electronic Library Online e Base de Dados de Enfermagem, por meio do metodo Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta. Resultados: Foram identificados 224 artigos, contudo, apos os metodos de triagem e elegibilidade, foram inclusos sete artigos nesta pesquisa. Discussao: Os artigos inclusos destacam a importância da higiene oral em pacientes hospitalizados em Unidades de Terapia Intensiva submetidos a ventilacao mecânica. Eles abordam aspectos importantes e confirmam a necessidade de tal cuidado, pois, mesmo sendo uma pratica tradicional na assistencia ao paciente, ate algum tempo atras, nao havia evidencias cientificas de sua relevância para a prevencao de infeccoes hospitalares. Conclusao: Evidenciou-se que a higiene oral e extremamente importante para prevencao da pneumonia associada a ventilacao mecânica, bem como tem ficado evidente a importância da implementacao de protocolos e treinamentos especificos para realizacao eficaz da mesma, contribuindo assim para a reducao das taxas de infeccoes, morbidade e mortalidade. ABSTRACT: Introduction: Pneumonia associated with mechanical ventilation is one that begins after 48 hours of mechanical ventilation or 48 hours after extubation. It’s one of the most frequent hospital infections in intensive care units, with rates varying from 9% to 40% of the infections acquired in this unit, being associated with an increase in hospitalization and morbidity and mortality rates. Objective: To describe, through the systematic review, the importance of oral hygiene in the prevention of mechanical ventilation associated pneumonia in intensive care units. Methodology: This is a systematic review with original articles, available in full, published between the years 2004 and 2014 in the databases Scientific Electronic Library Online and Nursing Database, using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta. Results: A total of 224 articles were identified, although seven articles were included in the study after the screening and eligibility methods. Discussion: The articles included highlight the importance of oral hygiene in patients hospitalized in Intensive Care Units submitted to mechanical ventilation, addressing important aspects and confirming the need for such care, even though it was a traditional practice in patient care until some time ago, there wasn’t scientific evidence of its relevance for the prevention of nosocomial infections. Conclusion: It was evidenced that oral hygiene is extremely important for the prevention of mechanical ventilation-associated pneumonia, as well as the importance of implementing specific protocols and training for effective ventilation, thus contributing to the reduction of infection rates, morbidity and mortality.
