| Abstract | 18 This work aimed at determining the amount of energy that can be har vested by 19 implementing microbial fuel cells (MFC) in horizontal subsurface constructed wetlands 20 (HSSF CWs) during the treatment of real domestic wastewate r. To this aim, MFC were 21 implemented in a pilot plant based on two HSSF CW, one fed with pr imary settled 22 wastewater (Settler line) and the other fed with the efflue nt of a hydrolytic up-flow 23 sludge blanket reactor (HUSB line). The eubacterial and archae al community was 24 profiled on wetland gravel, MFC electrodes and primary treated w aste ater by means 25 of 16S rRNA gene-based 454-pyrosequencing and qPCR of 16S rRNA and mcrA genes. 26 Maximum current (219 mA/m) and power (36 mW/m) densities were obtained for the 27 HUSB line. Power production pattern correlated well with water level fluctuations 28 *Manuscript Click here to download Manuscript: Manuscript.docx Click here to view linked References |
