Abstract	espanolAunque se ha empezado recientemente a valonar el papel positivo de los terratenientes en el crecimiento agrario espanol, se sabe relativamente poco sobre la participacion de la vieja aristocracia terrateniente en estos cambios. A traves del analisis de la gestion administrativa, la contabilidad, las inversiones y estrategias dr algunas casas aristocraticas ele ambito nacional, el articulo pone de relieve la lentitud e, incluso, fracasos de algunas transformaciones. El estudio muestra que ni los factores mentales, ni la escasez de recursos y oportunidades explican estos fracasos. En cambio se destaca la incapacidad de estos propietarios para crear una organizacion administrativa eficaz que pudiera, simultaneamente, resolver los problemas planteados por la fragmentacion patrimonial y la indefiuiciou dr los derechos de propiedad formales y estimular los nuevos cambios productivos. EnglishAlthough only recently the positive performance of the landlords in the Spanish Agricultural grow has been, standed up we know relatively little about the participation of the landed aristocraty in these changes. Through the analysis of the administration, the accounting, investments and strategies of some aristocratic families, the article emphasizes the slowness and very often failure of some transformations. The work shows that nor mental factors neither the scarcity of resources and opportunities explain these failures. Instead it is poined out their incapacity in creating an efficient organization wich could solve, at the same time, the problems of a scattered inheritance and the ambiguities of formal property rights.
