| Abstract | The efficacy of the insecticides fentoate, fenitrothion and clorpyriphos was evaluated in the control of coffee berry borer at a dosage of 0.3 cc/ coffee tree of commercial formulation, using different sprayers equipment under insect induced and natural infestations of coffee berries. The knapsack sprayers tested were: lever - operated (P) "Royal Condor"; pressure retained (PPR), "Triunfo 40 - 100 - 10" pressure retained equipment with vertical boom (PPR+AV) "Triunfo 40 - 100 - 10"; motorized back pack sprayer (ME) "Maruyama MS056" and semi stationary (SE) "Maruyama MS 253". Four-year-old plots of Castillo ® variety planted at a distance of 1 x 1 m were selected. Treatments were allocated following a completely randomized design in factorial arrangement. Mortality was evaluated eight days after treatment applications by taking a sample of 100 infested fruits per plot and dissecting the berries to register the number of living and dead coffee berry borers. The natural infestation varied in the plots between 3.1 and 10.2% and the artificial infestation between 88.4 and 98.5%. The mortality caused by insecticides in the natural infestation varied between 77.4 and 82.6%, whereas the artificial infestation varied between 81.7 and 97.0 %, with the different sprayer equipments. Mortality caused to coffee berry borer by insecticides did not show meaningful statistical differences (P= 0.05) using the different sprayers. However, the highest mortality rates were achieved using PPR, SE and P. |
