Abstract	RESUMO Recorda o significado que teve a criacao do antigo Instituto Joaquim Nabuco (hoje Fundacao Joaquim Nabuco) para as Ciencias Sociais em Pernambuco, instituicao em que atuou, quando jovem, o proprio autor. Passa em revista os primeiros tempos do IJN, referindo-se aos pioneiros da sociologia no estado, as primeiras pesquisas de campo realizadas no interior pernambucano e a ilustres professores visitantes estrangeiros, que estiveram na instituicao a convite de sua direcao. O artigo foi extraido de exposicao realizada na mesa-redonda A Fundacao Joaquim Nabuco e o campo das Ciencias Sociais no Brasil: linhagens, trajetorias, perspectivas no XIV Ciso, em 9 de setembro de 2009. ABSTRACT The author recalls the significance of the creation of the former Joaquim Nabuco Institute for the Social Sciences (today known as the Joaquim Nabuco Foundation) in Pernambuco, an institution where he served as a youth. He revisits the earliest days of the Institute, recalling pernambucan pioneers of sociology, the first field research conducted in the interior of the state and distinguished visiting professors from abroad who participated in the institution at the invitation of its leadership. The article is excerpted from a round table presentation held at the event; Joaquim Nabuco Foundation and the Field of Social Sciences in Brazil: lineages, trajectories, perspectives on the XIV Social Sciences Meeting of the North and Northeast (Ciso), on September 9, 2009.
