| Abstract | This research paper involves discovering women’s political participation issues in China. The goal of this paper is to answer two questions: First, is female political participation in China high or low compared with other countries of similar scales, political institutions, and cultural contexts? Second, what are the conditions under which women participate in politics in China? I did this by examining women’s political participation at both cross-national level and sub-national level within, over time and cross region. Through showing the factors that affect women’s political participation, this research highlights the importance of culture, modernization theory (i.e. education, income) and political institutions’ effect on facilitating or restricting women’s political participation. I found that there is a lack of support for cultural explanations (specifically Confucianism), and strong support for modernization theory and political institutions as explanation for women’s political participation both at cross-national level and at sub-national level within China. |
