| Abstract | The economic performance of Argentina between the end of the 19 and the beginning of the 20 century has been a field of intensive research in the last 40 years. Two crucial results of this research are that the growth rates of income per capita had been very high during the period and that the income per capita of Argentina in 1914 was among the highest in the world. However, our understanding of the regional dimension of this process of economic growth is rather limited. We know that some regions of the country specialized in the production of cereals and livestock, for which they have very large international comparative advantages based in the abundance of high-quality land, while other regions specialized in the production of some goods oriented to the internal market (and eventually benefitted by high tariffs). The production of wine in Mendoza and sugar in Tucumán are the two most obvious examples of the latter. Did these differences in specialization generated systematic differences across regions of economic structure in terms sector shares of labor, capital per capita, cultivated land per capita, etc? Were all the regions in Argentina equally benefitted by the process of economic growth in this period, characterized by a strong integration in the world market? In this paper we reconstruct a set of key macroeconomic variables from two provinces (Buenos Aires –one of the most efficient producers of grain and meat in the periodand Tucumán -specialized in sugar production-) in 1914: in particular we offer the first estimates of their provincial GDPs.
