| Abstract | With the rapid growth in computing and communication technology, the past decade has witnessed a proliferation of powerful parallel and distributed systems and an ever-increasing demand for practice of high performance computing (HPC). HPC has moved into the mainstream of computing and become a key technology in determining future research and development activities in many academic and industrial branches, especially when the solution of large and complex science and engineering problems must cope with very tight timing schedules. We would like to use this special issue to report the most recent important advances in the aspects of hardware/software support for high performance computing. This issue contains 15 papers contributed from prominent researchers around the world. All papers are selected from the PACT-SHPSEC workshop and also from open call for papers through our tough review process. We believe all of these papers and topics will not only provide novel ideas, new results, work in progress and state-of-the-art techniques in the area, but also stimulate the future research activities in the area of high performance computing with applications. This issue of Parallel Processing Letters is composed of four parts, namely programming and system support, performance evaluation, scheduling, and scientific and engineering applications, respectively. |
