| Abstract | The Ecosan Promotion Project (EPP) implemented a number of UDDTs in schools as part of the project. The focus on school sanitation in general had several long-term objectives: • To improve the learning conditions of the students through improved sanitation facilities and accompanied hygiene education. The sanitation solutions had a focus on the reuse of human excreta as a resource. This concept is also known as ecological sanitation (ecosan). • To engage a wider audience of schools and the surrounding households, so called clusters in order to support, stimulate and create demand for ecosan in the area. • To engage the children as effective agents of change. Children pass on their knowledge of better hygiene practices and improved facilities from school to their parents and thus influence the communities. • The toilets built under this program mainly served as an entry point for promotion and awareness raising only. The number built per school (usually four cubicles) was too few to have a real impact on the everyday life of the pupils. |
