| Abstract | The objective of this experiment was to study the effect of genetic type, sex, birth type and birth season and birth season and year on weight at birth. weight at weaning and lamb growth during the lactation. Data of birth weight from 170 lambs according to genetic type. sex. birth type and birth season and year were controlled. The data obtained were studied through a means variance analysis. Merino ewes with Merino Precoz or Ile de France males crossbreeding did not increase the lambs weight at birth. The weight at birth of males was higher than that of females. Single birth lambs were heavier than double birth lambs at birth. The lambs born during Spring (April-May) showed a higher weight at birth than that of those born in Summer (August-September). The year had not significant effect on lamb weight at birth. During the lactation period. from birth to 45 days old (weaning age). 157 lambs were controlled. The data were studied through means variance. covariance and regression analysis. The growth of Ile de France x Merino lambs was greater than that of the other genetic types studied (Merino Precoz x Merino and Merino x Merino). We did not observe significant differences in growing during lactation and weight at weaning between males and females. The single birth lambs grew during lactation and weighed more at weaning than lambs from the double births. The birth season and year fixed factors did not affect daily growth during lactation nor weight at weaning. The birth weight of lambs explained the 40 and 43% of the variability of lamb weight at 30 and 45 days old. respectively. It is concluded that an adequate modulation of sheep feeding during the last third of pregnancy is necessary to palliate the negative effects of high temperatures on lamb weight at birth. It is also interesting for sheep farmers to use Merino sheep with Ile de France males crossbreeding. |
