| Abstract | This case study formulates and performs a pilot test of a novel, cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT) group program for young anxious children and their parents. The core of the program was mindfulness training and exposure. The study investigated if the program could reduce the children’s anxiety symptoms, and increase the family adjustment and the children’s functioning level. Another purpose was to get feedback from the parents about the treatment program. Eight sessions were held during nine weeks. Three anxious children aged 6-8 years old and their parents were included in the study. Measurements being used before and after treatment were The Brief Child and Family Phone Interview (BCFPI), Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and The Spence Children’s Anxiety Scale for Parents (SCAS-P) and interview with the parents. Treatment process was measured weekly by visual analogue scales. Results showed reliable improvements for two of the three children in reduced anxiety and depression symptoms, and increased family adjustment. The results for the third child showed a reliable impairment on separation anxiety and depression, and reduced family adjustment to the problem. The results of this study suggest that the treatment program might be useful for anxious children aged 6-8 years and their parents. Further research is recommended to modify and evaluate the treatment program. |
