| Abstract | Global concern on the effects of climate change has forced countries to seek solutions to reduce fossil fuel. In this context, sugar cane presents itself as a major source of renewable energy in Brazil. However, the increase in cultivated area and some management in sugar cane cultivation, such as the burning of trash and waste generation pratices, can cause serious environmental impacts. The soil fauna can be used as bioindicators of soil quality, the physical, chemical and biological variations of ecosystems and, contribute to the development of management alternatives that are both productive and conservative from an environmental standpoint. This study evaluated the impacts of sugar cane cultivation and management (method harvest, with and without the use of fire, and application to vinasse) on the soil mesofauna in Colorado – Paraná. For a better understanding of the effects of treatments, an area of native vegetation remnant (subtropical forest) was used to control datas comparison. Each treatment was composed of 3 parts, each with an area of 400 m (20 m x 20 m) in a completely randomized design. The samples were collected in January, March, May, July, September and November of 2008. Multivariate analysis was used to evaluate treatment different on the mesofauna communities through Principal Component Analysis (PCA). To verify the correlation of organisms with environmental variables (parameters of fertility) was performed a Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA). Individuals were classified into classes, subclasses, order and number. Diversity indices (Shannon, Pielou and wealth), and data coverage and moisture of soil, were compared by Duncan test at 5%. The retention of stubble favored the density of soil mesofauna. The stillage no had direct effects on mesofauna. Compared to the forest, the treatments with sugar cane without straw had lower diversity (Shannon, Pielou and richness) and density of organisms. |
