Abstract	Aim: This systematic review assessed the efficacy of pharmacological treatments in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) of muscular type. Methodology: We analyzed randomized controlled trials, published in the last ten years, in which the effectiveness of pharmacologic therapies were assessed, in women or men, aged 18-65 years with TMD of muscular type, registered in the National Center for Biotechnology Information via Pubmed and the Cochrane Library until June 05 of 2012. Of the 213 articles in these databases, 11 met our inclusion criteria. We also conducted a manual search for studies of analgesic and anti-inflammatories, but no additional articles could be found. We evaluated the quality of randomization and blinding, the statistical power and risk of bias. Two independent reviewers evaluated entries. Results: Only two articles could be classified as having adequate quality. There was no description of the calculation of statistical power in eight articles. Two articles described improperly allocating concealment and in two of them blinding were not adequately reported. Regarding the results, four articles failed to report side effects. In the analysis of quality as indexed by the JADAD scale, eight articles were classified as having good quality. As to the risk of bias, only two articles were low risk, five were considered at moderate risk, and four as high risk. Conclusion: It is necessary to conduct further studies with larger samples and with better control and methodological quality for pharmacological therapy in patients with muscular TMD.
