| Abstract | Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics and the visual prognosis of pediatric patients affected whit optic neuritis in our population. Material and methods: Retrospective analysis of all patients younger than 16 years old, with clinical criteria of optic neuritis were revised at the Pediatric Neurology Department of the Hospital Universitario “Dr. José Eleuterio González” of the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (Monterrey, México), from January 2008 to January 2012. Results: Ten patients fulilled the clinical criteria of optic neuritis, the overall mean age was 11.6 years, six (60%) were male and four (40%) female. Bilateral affection was present in one patient (10%), nine patients (90%) had unilateral involvement, ive patients (50%) had optic disc swelling, and optic atrophy in three patients (30%). The CSF analysis was normal in nine patients (90%), one case (10%) had positive antiquaporin 4 antibodies, the MRI was abnormal in ive patients (50%), the visual evoked potentials was abnormal in all cases. The visual prognosis was excellent, (20/20) in three cases (30%), good (< 20/50) in two cases (20%), regular (20/50 to 20/70) in three patients (30%) and bad (>20/200) in two patients (20%), only one patient had one recurrence. Conclusion: In our population, the clinical evolution differs from that reported in other parts of the world. A larger study is needed to assess the real incidence, prevalence and clinical characteristics of patients with optic neuritis in Mexico and their risk of developing multiple sclerosis.
