| Abstract | This report considers beliefs about chance in relation to understanding of random processes and luck. Changes in chance beliefs over twoand four-year periods were measured for 265 students initially in Grades 3 and 6. Students were asked three questions on repeated occasions, based on the meaning of the word random, their beliefs about luck, and their beliefs about how luck affects winning a lottery. Change was also measured for performance on three questions related to chance measurement. The association of chance belief and chance measurement was found to be weak. Educational implications are considered. |
