| Abstract | The identification of risk factors throughout the perioperative period allows the identification of patients who are most vulnerable to complications and who would benefit from specific interventions. The nursing diagnosis Risk for delayed surgical recovery of NANDA International cluster surgical risk factors, however, because it is a recent terminology, there are no studies available on its practical application. The objectives were to analyze the concept of nursing diagnosis Risk for delayed surgical recovery, aiming at its clarification and establishment of operational definitions; and to verify which risk factors present a greater chance of being associated to the cases of delayed surgical recovery when compared to the patients without delayed surgical recovery.: Initially the analysis of the diagnosis concept was conducted according to the model proposed by Walker and Avant. Subsequently a case control study was carried out, where 71 cases were compared with 168 controls. The criteria for determining the cases were: prolongation of the postoperative hospitalization time, rehospitalization, reoperation and evidence of interruption of wound healing. The association between risk factors and the occurrence of delayed surgical recovery was verified by the Chi-square test (χ2) and Fisher's exact test. The risk factors with higher odds of association with recovery were malnutrition (OR = 8.0), infected surgeries (OR = 7.64), delirium (OR = 6.48), and postoperative emotional response (OR = 5.21), intraoperative complications (OR = 4.81), contaminated surgeries (OR = 4.61), transfusion of blood products (OR = 4.25), pain (OR = 3.68), anemia (OR= 3.13), impaired mobility (OR = 2.59), prolonged surgical procedure (OR = 2.89). The identification of the risk factors allows decision making on the best nursing interventions for a safe care and a recovery in a minimum time. |
