| Abstract | Conceptual framework: within the scope of the social cognitive theories, the academic engagement of the student (AES) is considered a multidimensional construct that encompasses four dimensions: cognitive, emotional, behavioural, and agentic. Additionally, a ifth dimension will be considered: citizenship. he empirical investigation carried out shows that there is a need to further research the link between AES and the students’ Mental Health (MH), which is considered to be an important matter of physical and emotional well-being that may impact the student personally, socially, and institutionally. Objectives: he intention is to ind answers to the following research questions: How can academic engagement and mental health in higher education students be deined, how do these variables relate to each other, and how do they difer as functions of personal, academic and family factors. Methodology: a quantitative approach resorting to the SPSS program will be employed. he sample will comprise about 1400 undergraduate students of the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon, from all years of study, ranging diferent subjects. Data will be collected through a survey that includes two tools: the Scale for Academic Engagement of the Student, a four-dimensional scale AES-4DS, by Veiga (2013), and the Mental Health Inventory MHI-38, by Veit and Ware (1983) in its version adapted to the Portuguese population by PaisRibeiro (2001). Results: the results are expected to contribute to the clariication of the relation between the AES variables and those of MH in third level students. hey should also show how the variables difer and are deined as functions of personal, academic and family factors. |
