Abstract	EnglishTo a greater or lesser degree, depending on the nation and the historical period, the media exerted an important role to interfere and redirect human relations. The paper presented has the goal to discuss the role of the press, from the placement of news and discussion on the question emerging environmental issues, and therefore your importance and contribution to social development. We will analyze the content of Sergipe newspaper � the Gazeta de Sergipe - about the environmental problems faced in the years 1972 and 1992, in Sergipe. We will seek in the course the text present the journalistic context interwoven Brazilian and Sergipe historical context, the conclusions taken from the study, and some suggestions for a greater contribution from the print media in terms to human development and the society portuguesEm maior ou menor intensidade, a depender da nacao e do periodo historico, os meios de comunicacao exerceram um importante papel de interferir e reorientar as relacoes humanas. O artigo apresentado tem como objetivo discutir o papel da imprensa escrita, a partir da veiculacao de materias e a discussao sobre a questao ambiental emergente, e com isso sua importância e contribuicao para o desenvolvimento social. Analisaremos o conteudo de um jornal sergipano � a Gazeta de Sergipe � acerca da problematica ambiental enfrentada entre os anos de 1972 e 1992, em Sergipe. Buscaremos no decorrer do texto apresentar o contexto jornalistico imbricado ao contexto historico brasileiro e sergipano; as conclusoes tomadas a partir do estudo; e algumas sugestoes para uma maior contribuicao da midia impressa no tocante ao desenvolvimento humano e da sociedade
