| Abstract | Background: Children who have been adopted present several risk factors such as mood disorders like the separation anxiety disorder, all of them problems regarding psychological issues (Mundaca, Rayo & Diaz, 2010). According to some authors, it is believed that these kinds of disorders or psychological problems are due to the way family act against the adoption event (Cuervo, 2007). In the seventies, Salvador Minuchin developed structural family therapy in order to change these structures or dynamics that could be causing conflict within a family when any kind of circumstance (Minuchin, 2001). Methodology: A sample of three families with an adopted child who presented separation anxiety disorder was used in the study in order to evaluate them through clinical interviews. Ten sessions were done applying structural family therapy, and immediately families were evaluated again through interviews to see if there is any effect of the therapy. Results: The results should demonstrate the existence of any effect of the therapy on family dynamics and the links (attachment theory) between the child and the parents, in order to reduce the disorder’s symptoms, such as excessive and recurrent concern about being separated from their family figures, the somatization symptoms, and conflicts at bedtime. Conclusions: Structural family therapy may positively affect children with separation anxiety disorder due to adoption, and may improve family dynamics and the bond between people who are part of it. |
