| Abstract | Summary Assessment of knowledge, attitudes, and practices is a crucial aspect of hypertension (HT) control, but little information is available in our country where HT is a major health problem. We examined knowledge, attitudes, an practices on HT in a random sample of 1466 adults over 18 years of age living in Ayd›n. The estimated prevalence of HT (screening blood pressure (BP) ≥ 140/90 mm Hg and/or taking antihypertensive medication) was 29.6%. Overall, 57.9% of hypertensive individuals were aware of their condition. 82.5% of hypertensives were being treated with antihypertensive medications, but only 19.8% of treated hypertensives had controlled BP. The mean BP levels of the previously hypertensive subjects taking no medication were lower than the mean levels of those on irregular medication (p 0.05). Having any social coverage did not change the attitudes of previous hypertensives on treatment. There was no statistically significant difference between the konwledge levels of normotensives and hypertensives, whether aware or unaware of the condition, on HT.In conclusion, our data point to the need to maximize the efficiency of HT diagnosis and treatment efforts and to conduct intervention strategies toward the prevention of high BP in the region. |
