| Abstract | Intracortical axonal projection patterns of thalamic TPNs were studied by recording antidromic responses following intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) of SI and PHA-L anatomical tracing study. Thalamic TPNs were recorded from the caudal part of the ventromedial nucleus of thalamus (VPM) and received peripheral cutaneous inputs from the intraoral and/or perioral regions in cats anesthetized with a chloralose (60 mgkg, i. v. ) and halothane (Z3%). ICMS effective sites were distributed in laminae m IV of the areas 3a and 3b of the middle to anterior part of the coronal gyrus in SI. These effective sites were distributed with clusters in SI. Following microinjection of PHAL (2.59, 0.51.0 in 1) into the VPM, many axons and axon collaterals were observed in laminae III IV of the areas 3a and 3b of the coronal gyrus. The distribution pattern of axons obtained from ICMS study was similar to those from PHA-L tracing study. These findings suggest that single thalamic TPN relays sensory informations from the tooth pulp, skin and mucous membrane to a few clustered zones of the primary somatosensory cortex. |
