| Abstract | Policing as professional activity is usually performed in contexts of social and criminal risk and under stressful conditions. The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work alerts that chronic job stress can lead to burnout and psychopathological symptoms, both suggesting psychological disease elicited by job tasks. This study aims to identify burnout and psychopathological symptoms among police officers from Portuguese National Police (PSP) in their first year of service, and verify if psychopathology predicts burnout. During regular psychological evaluations performed by PSP's Division of Psychology, 1045 police officers were inquired using MBI and SCL90-R. We found low psychopathological symptoms and low burnout, maybe because police officers begin their careers. However 1.6% felled already emotional exhaustion and depersonalization weekly, 6.5% presented moderated burnout level and 0.5% high burnout level. Depersonalization was greater among men and negatively correlated with age. Emotional exhaustion and depersonalization correlated positively with psychopathological symptoms, and these explained 40% of exhaustion, 25% of depersonalization and 13% of professional achievement, reinforcing the association between burnout and psychological disease, being emotional exhaustion the main dimension linked to psychopathology. The regular assessment of these professionals will allow to analyze the progression of psychological disease and to define stress management strategies adapted to police officers, decreasing, in this risky profession, human and financial costs. |
