| Abstract | The role of borders has been debated in international relations for some time. The conformation of regional blocs and the appearance of new perspectives for South American countries have forged a pacific situation of mutual respect within the region, putting an end to centuries of disputes and distrusts. In this context, the borders are a natural space of interaction between the inhabitants of the region. In order to deepen regional integration, the first step involves dealing with these areas and their local actors (society, state and market). The goal must be to overcome the existent barriers and build regional public goods. With this in mind, this article aims to discuss how the Brazilian foreign policy has dealt with the borders of the country, from 1985 to 2014. The text has the following structure: i) historic and theoretical analysis of the borders and their dynamics within the regions; ii) regional integration initiatives aimed to approaching the borders, bilateral and multilateral, particularly in Mercosur; and iii) recent projects launched to foster border integration. |
