| Abstract | At the present time, one of the most important challenges in Palaeolithic research is to overcome the paradigm of a single site and to approach the study of hunter societies from a regional perspective, as the mobile nature of these societies requires. Indeed, their mobility should be taken into account in the strategy of all our research into Palaeolithic groups and not only in the study of more or less exotic objects. Portable art, studied from the chaînes opératoires viewpoint, provides significant data for understanding hunter societies within their territory. The results of the study of a sandstone plaquette found in Level 2 at El Horno Cave (Ramales de la Victoria, Cantabria), attributed to the latefinal Magdalenian, supply a good example of this approach. Side A of the plaquette displays the engraving of a head, probably of a red deer hind, which is an uncommon subject in the late Magdalenian. The technological analysis has shown that it is the work of an inexpert artist. Side B is engraved and painted, and the marks that have been identified suggest the plaquette was used as a mortar to crush some material, such as the ochre itself. In this respect, the object contributes arguments to the current debate on the dichotomy that has traditionally been made in portable art between utilitarian and non-utilitarian objects. |
