| Abstract | From 2 to 4 May 2007, a Group of Experts met at the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (RWI) premises in Lund, Sweden, under the auspices of a joint United Nations University (UNU)–RWI project to discuss current issues and challenges facing the UN human rights special procedures system and the institution of UN human rights mandate-holders. On 4 May, the group adopted the “Lund Statement to the United Nations Human Rights Council on the Human Rights Special Procedures”. The present article explains why the Group of Experts felt it important to adopt the Lund Statement, which Ambassador Hans van Ginkel, UNU Rector, transmitted to the President of the UN Human Rights Council. The Rector’s letter and the Statement itself, became official Council document HRC/5/18 of 13 June 2007. |
