| Abstract | The objective of this paper is to identify the nature and the cause of spatial and temporal variations in erosion response for areas ranging from small fields to 1 km catchment. Two data sets are studied: data from plots of ca. 1000 m and 3000 m consisting of vineyard with either mechanical or chemical weeding; data from a catchment of 91 ha with 70% vineyard. Between the two scales, a significant decrease in the erosion rate is observed as the area increases. This trend, which has already been observed by many researchers, confirms that catchment erosion cannot be considered as the sum of individual field’s erosion. In this context, the scaling transition between the plots and the 1 km catchment can be analysed in terms of connectivity between the sediment producing and deposition areas. Furthermore, data with contrasting land management for the field scale show large differences for the erosion rate. |
