| Abstract | Abundance and distribution of guanacos (Lama guanicoe) in the Argen- tine sector of Tierra del Fuego. In order to determine the distribution of abundance of guanacos in the Argentine Sector of Tierra del Fuego, aerial surveys on an area of 20663 km 2 were performed during the spring of 1995 after an unusual cold winter with one of the largest snow falls recorded for the Island. The territory was divided in 5 agroecological zones according to topography, vegetation and agricultural characteristics. Surveys were conducted on a series of predefined polygons covering 2610 km2. A total of 19952 guanacos were estimated, with mean densities fluctuating between 0.33 in the steppe zone to 2.13 guana- cos/ km 2 in the forest-steppe ecotone. Mortality rate calculated from the survey data was about 5%. Sampling of dead animals in the forest zone may be biased since corpses cannot be detected in the aerial survey. Guanacos seek shelter and tend to spend the winter season in the coastal regions associated with forest, where higher mortality rates (45.9%) were calculated. Aiming to asses the impact of a hard winter on mortality, a population projection of data obtained in 1988 resulted in a calculated population of about 27000 guanacos. In that case, mortality rate would reach about 26% of the live population. Similar statistics were reported for sheep (26%) and cows (32%). The reduced number of guanacos is a conse- quence of competition with domestic animals, illegal hunting, habitat shrinking, forest man- agement and harsh winters. Although guanaco population seem still healthy, future plans for conservation and sustainable use for the species should consider climatic events as factors of increased mortality in order to avoid local extinction.
