| Abstract | NEOLITHIC AND POST-NEOLITHIC FUNERALS. Archaeological research on preislaxnic burials led in the Niger S'ahara, during the last ten years, allows us to characterize some Neolithic and post-Neolithic funeral rituals. Traces of burials appear only for the recent periods and they are reliably dated, in the Niger Sahara, only after 5500 BC. The study of the burials, simple graves without particular signs or more or less coxnplex constructions of Stones and earth (tumulus) allows us to propose some patent and systematic features, which are interpreted as markers of funeral rites. Preferential orientations of the corpse depend on sites and periods. Females were generaly buried on their left side and males on their right side. The territorial and chronological lixnits for several typical funerary monuments of the Niger Sahara have also been deterxnined. |
