| Abstract | Nowadays, the social concern about environmental pollution has increased. Because of this, the decontamination techniques have been upgraded, so that, new processes have been developed to remove specific products. The main source of pollution is the spill of waste water from the industries. This is because many of the conventional decontamination treatments fail to eliminate certain products. That’s why new techniques are responsible for removing these compounds. Some of the advanced oxidation techniques are photo-Fenton process, ozonation, photolysis of water and ultrasound. In the following research work, we have used water samples artificially contaminated with eight compounds resulting from the cork industry. These compounds are 2,4-dinitrofenol and gallic, ellagic, tannic, vanillic, sinapic, syringic and protocatechuic acids. Water samples have been subjected to treatments of advanced oxidation by photoFenton, at different times. Toxicological effects of the different samples have been evaluated by using bioassays. The effect on algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata has been determined measuring inhibition of growth; and the effect on the earthworm Eisenia fetida has been determined measuring mortality and growth and reproduction effects. The results of Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata assay determine that the sample with more toxicity is the untreated sample, and from this sample, the inhibition of growth is declining gradually. At 20 minutes of treatment, a slight increase of growth inhibition is observed. This may be due to the generation of intermediates which are also toxic. On the other hand, the effects in Eisenia fetida show that, the organisms exposed to 20 minutes samples have greater weight gain, but a lower cocoon production. Unlike samples treated for 210 minutes which don’t differ from control, in weight and cocoon production. With these results we can conclude that the treatment, over 210 min, of contaminated samples, by the process of advanced oxidation photo-Fenton, has proved to be effective. |
