| Abstract | AZIM KHAN AND *JAMES, O. GARNER JR Agriculture Research Institute, North Mingora, Swat, NWFP, Pakistan *Mississippi State University Starkville, USA --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ABSTRACT Four sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L. Lam.) cultivars (`Centennial', `Jewel', Beauregard' and `Hernandez' were treated with CO2, SO2 and CO2 + SO2 during the first 24 hours of curing. Seven day curing and seven month storage was done under recommended temperature and relative humidity. Higher water content was recorded in all treated storage roots as compared to the control, except SO2 treated ones for `Centennial' and `Hernandez'. Storage roots treated with SO2 and CO2 + SO2 had higher weight loss as compared to the control. Sprouting was reduced by all treatments except the SO2 treated storage roots of `Hernandez' as compared to the control. There was no sprouting observed for five months of storage in CO2 treated storage roots of `Beauregard', SO2 and CO2 + SO2 treated roots of `centennial' and SO2 treated roots of `Jewel'. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
