| Abstract | The aim of the paper is to explore the historical and socially situated nature of biomedical monopoly. We focus on how this monopoly is questioned from different expressions related to civil society. In order to do this, the paper stresses a series of relationships between three social agents that make the construction of the formal health system in the country: 1) the State, 2) the official medicine, constituted in a corporation (FREIDSON, 1970) capable of influencing government decisions and policies and 3) the social actors at the margins of healing social space, which represent a potential threat vis-a-vis the monopoly of official medicine. To systematize these networks, the article has two sections. First, we present a historical context, seeking to show how it delineates a transformation regarding the attitude of the state on medical approaches. Second, we analyze the horizon of possibility of transforming the health field in Argentina today. |
