| Abstract | Although it has been researched for more than three decades, reading comprehension is still a matter of investigation, as testified by the amount of ongoing research in the field. One of the major areas of study is the identification of factors that can facilitate and/or explain varying degrees of success in reading comprehension. Our study was inspired by that of Carrell and Wise (1998), the only study (to the best of our knowledge) which has examined the relative impact of prior knowledge and interest in a particular topic on reading comprehension in ESL among both international students· as weIl as immigrants of various origins. The main objective of the present research is to determine the respective roles played by prior knowledge and interest in the subject of the text on performance in reading comprehension of adult immigrant French as a second language learners. |
