| Abstract | After discussing some of Claude Duchet's theoretical propositions and after defining socio-criticism as it is understood by the Centre d'Etudes et de Recherche Sociocritiques de l'Universite de Montpellier, the author of this article goes on to stress the judiciousness of Duchet's approach in his analysis of the incipit of Madame Bovary, and proposes to apply the same method to Vargas Llosa's novel La tia Julia y el escribidor. He first examines the social discourses expressed in the opening paragraph of chapter 1 of the novel. In a second part, he discusses the rhetoric of the text composition in the first two paragraphs of chapter 2, in order to show Vargas Llosa's novel is built up by parodying the universe and the processes of para-literature. This analysis of two micro-sequences of the text provides the reader with important elements which make it possible to signpost the genotext of the novel, and direct us towards a sociocritical interpretation of the whole of Vargas Llosa's works. |
