| Abstract | With the arrival of the new paradigm of “active ageing” conceived by the World Health Organisation (WHO 2002), we are witnessing a new way of focusing on progressive ageing in the population. This focus involves encouraging the attainment of a life expectancy which is healthy and free of disability, through the promotion of policies and programmes, whose principal objectives centre on independence and autonomy throughout the ageing process. In accordance with this focus, we think that significant activities are a good tool with which to maintain the autonomy of these people, by promoting prevention of illness and good health. This is the reason for our study. The principal objective of this present study is to know and understand which activities have significance and provide personal satisfaction in young older people, who have finished their careers, are in good health and enjoy a favourable psychophysical condition and who live independently in the community. The aim is also to establish whether there is a link between the activities these people decide to carry out at the moment and their previous occupational profile and history. Finally the study aims to discover which type of management each person prefers concerning the carrying out of the everyday activities, and which are of greatest significance to them according to context. The theoretical framework is developed from the conceptualisation of various authors concerning active ageing and the science of occupation. The methodology used is of a qualitative nature, with a constructivist paradigm. The results of the study show that there is a slight change in tendencies concerning the choice of, and the significance that, people of young old age attribute to their activities. They also show that activities chosen as most significant by these people have a link to those carried out before retirement, 7 connected with their previous history or occupational profile. Finally they show that the type of management of activities that the people choose influences the choice of environment where they are carried out. |
