| Abstract | The shortage and contamination of one of the most important resources like water suggests the invention of new treatment systems. Currently, constructed wetlands offer multiple benefits as a water treatment system, due to contaminant removal, low costs and positive environmental impact by hosting many species. In the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, a horizontal subsurface flow wetland was built, and was used to verify the pathogen removal efficiencies of the rain water entering the system, determine whether these could be reused, and also if the media size of the system had any bearing during the removal. For these, samples were taken during rainfall events, and values of pH, redox potential, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, total coliforms and E. coli were determined, the last two analyzed with Colilert. Removal efficiencies between 85-89% and 81-99% for total coliforms and E. coli respectively were found, and according to the water quality leaving the wetland, it could be used for irrigation taking into account that quality would improve if some construction problems in the wetland were checked. |
