| Abstract | This study was a part of the GROW-project at Arcada University of Applied Sciences. The thesis discussed the effect corrective surgery had on the psychological health and quality of life of the pectus excavatum patients. The aim of this study was to conclude how pectus excavatum as a physical deformity affected the behavior, feelings and body image and through these factors the quality of life of the patients. The study also examined if the mental state of the patients changed as a result of the surgery and how this change was expressed. The questions in this thesis were: 1) What kind of problems do the patients experience concerning behavior, feelings and body image due to the deformity? 2) How does the mental state and quality of life of the patients change after surgical care. The study was performed with literature analysis, consisting of scientific articles. A total of 11 articles were included in the study. The material was compressed, analyzed and interpreted with the help of systematic content analysis. Pectus excavatum showed to have a negative impact on the quality of life of the patient and the psychosocial problems were obvious. Patients suffered from a bad self-esteem and body image. They described that they experienced a loss of life control and stigmatization. An elevated self-awareness concerning the own body resulted in problems regarding social life and lead to avoiding behavior in social situations. This was harmful for the normal development. The surgical correction had a positive impact on the quality of life and psychological health of the patient. The perception of the own body image improved, behavior problems were reduced and the patients became braver socially. The surgical correction gave the patients a new chance to fulfill their own individual potential and regain a stable psychological health and a good quality of life. |
