| Abstract | This paper analyses and compares the emergence of historiography and archeology in 19th century Costa Rica. The origin of historiography is associated with the need to compile documents related to the jurisdictional borders established by the Spanish Crown, in order to sustain the necessary arguments for the establishment of territorial boundaries of the Costa Rican State. In the case of archeology, its development also stemmed from the need to strenghthen a national identity for the new state, which in turn was the main reason for the foundation of the National Museum, where many objects from the indigenous cultures would be exhibited. As a consequence of this process, historiographic knowledge was augmented in relation to the previous colonial period and the first serious cientific research was initiated in the archeological field.
