| Abstract | Environmental problems caused by humans, the decline in oil reserves, among other factors, intensified studies in search of clean and renewable energy, this contest presents the biodiesel, which can partially or fully replace fossil fuels in the combustion automotive engines or stationary diesel cycle. In Brazil there are several species of oil plants with potential for biodiesel production. Waste can also be used animal fats, and residual oils chips. Objective, after the historical contextualization, perform the analysis of the current biodiesel production chain in Brazil, detailing highlighting the importance this has for the country's economy and its social contribution, highlighting government programs for the sector, raw materials used and the challenges that still need to be overcome. Highlighted the challenges to boost biodiesel production in the country. The need for research to promote the diversity of raw materials, processes and uses of new technologies for the production.
