| Abstract | This is an environmental assessment for the Second Agricultural Technology Project for Nicaragua (supporting PRORURAL), which strengthens the Government's inter-institutional and technical capacity to coordinate a sector-wide approach (SWAp) to the agriculture and forestry sector, and promotes enhanced agricultural/forestry technology innovation and adoption, with a focus on smallholders. This report assesses potentially negative environmental impacts and proposes measures to mitigate them. Risks and mitigations include: Using integrated pest management, naturally occurring fertilizers, cultural practices, and a variety of resistant species to reduce insect pests while ensuring that toxic substances or pesticides are avoided in seed processing or other project activities; identifying critical habitats and ensuring their protection; involving the local community in conservation work and environmental management; and implement any other recommendations that surfaced in the environmental audit. |
