| Abstract | gy (IT)-especially the remarkable technical developments, the short product life cycles and the ubiquity of electronic devices-have led to efforts to incorporate environmental considerations into the design of electronic products in Japan and throughout the world. As readers of this journal know, Japan is an important center of activity in ecodesign•¦1 and life-cycle assessment (LCA). Developments in eco-design and LCA in Western Europe and North American are increasingly occurring within the framework of an emerging field known as industrial ecology. This paper introduces the field of industrial ecology, explains where eco-design, LCA and related endeavors fit in this new framework, and summarizes its origins and development. The paper concludes by describing plans for international collaboration through the formation of a society for industrial ecology. |
