| Abstract | The objective of this research was to describe the Meningococcal Disease (MD) in the years 2014 to 2017, from an epidemiological perspective, to analyze the behavior of the disease. In the period, 5,172 cases were reported throughout the country, with an average incidence rate of 0.63/100 thousand inhabitants, an average mortality rate of 0.14/100 thousand inhabitants and an average case fatality rate of 21.9%. The most affected age group was children under 5 years of age. The most circulating serogroup was C, followed by B. Was noted that in the north and northeast the identification of serogroups were extremely low. The most serious clinical form was meningococcemia and the most common symptoms were non-specifics. The culture, gold standard in diagnosis of MD, continues to be widely used, however, there was an increased in the use of the polymerase chain reaction technique (PCR). |
