| Abstract | There are 12 pairs of cranial nerves although the optic nerve is really an extension of the brain rather than a peripheral nerve. The ability to test them swiftly, efficiently and to interpret the findings should be a core competency for general practice. The separate article Neurological History and Examination includes a description of a brief examination of the cranial nerves. Here the aim is to give a slightly fuller account of examination whilst interpretation of the findings is discussed elsewhere in the separate article on Cranial Nerve Lesions. There are also more specific separate articles on Diplopia and III, IV and VI Cranial Nerve Lesions and Visual Field Defects. |
