Abstract	Sustainable development is now inscribed in speeches and public policies, including water policy. This concept emerged recently in the international and French scenes. It still appears frequently as a concept with uncertain boundaries and imprecise content. How to analyze and evaluate a project in terms of sustainability, ie balancing the protection and enhancement of the environment, economic development and social progress? To provide a framework guiding the practical implementation of sustainable development in a project, a first grid of multi-criteria analysis has been developed by the Scientific and Technical Network of the Ministry in charge of ecology. This grid is based on the principles of the Rio Declaration of 1992, applies to different scales: action programs, operations management, equipment and structures. It has been applied in water management. After recalling the fundamentals of sustainable development, applied to water and aquatic environment management, this paper outlines the applications and principles of use of the grid, and illustrates its implementation on two scales: study of a hydraulic scheme within a vineyard and implementation of a vegetated wetland for wastewater treatment.
