| Abstract | The work presented herein aims at studying some relevant aspects of the flexural behavior of high performance reinforced concrete beams from a Fracture Mechanics point of view. Initially, the main characteristics of high performance concretes as well as some of its mechanical properties are described. The fundamental concepts of Fracture Mechanics applied to concrete are briefly introduced. Also, a new methodology for the experimental determination of the fracture toughness of concrete is presented in some detail. In the context of practical applications, a number of design situations in which size effects may play a major role are outlined in the text. These include shear strength of beams without web reinforcement, minimum flexural reinforcement and deformability of reinforced concrete beams. The key objective of this thesis is the development of a flexural fracture model for beams subjected to uniform bending moment, taking into account the strain localization phenomenon. The model is initially formulated for the case of uniaxial compression and yields size dependent stressstrain curves. The model is then extended to the compression zone of a bent beam with the purpose of studying the influence of the beam size on its deformability. An experimental and numerical investigation of high performance reinforced concrete beams is carried out to verify the validity of the proposed model. The results of the experimental investigation clearly indicate an influence of the beam size on its post-peak ductility. Furthermore, the numerical simulation shows that the proposed model is able to capture reasonably well this size dependence. |
