| Abstract | A look back at the 20th century reveals that education provided the momentum for economic growth and social development in both developing and developed countries. Global economic competition is, in a sense, a competition for science and technology, education, and human resources. In the 21st century, the world faces the challenge of the high-technology revolution. More and more experts think that this century will be dominated by knowledge-based economies, and the most important sources of economic growth will turn out to be the production, processing, dissemination, and application of knowledge as well as information. In the era of the knowledge-based economy, knowledge is fundamental, talent crucial, and education essential. Education will play a prominent and basic role both in knowledge innovation and human resource development. Only those who control education will possibly survive the fierce worldwide competition. |
