| Abstract | TAKAO NAKAMURAl, MASAHIRO SHIMONOl, MASATAKA KUSUNOK12, ICHIRO MINEJIMA’, TSUTOMU HARA2, KOICHI KAWAHARAl In our previous works, temporary decrease in blood glucose level, showing the increase in muscle glucose uptake, was observed immediately after the onset of tetanic but not rhythmic contraction of hindlimb muscle induced by electrical stimulation of the sciatic nerve in rats, which suggested the existence of neural control system of muscle glucose uptake, as one of the non-insulin mediated glucose uptake mechanisms, and that the control system could include the sympathetic nervous system. Therefore, in the present study, muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) in the ipsilateral sciatic nerve was directly measured by microneurography, before and after the hindlimb muscle contraction. The results showed that MSNA increased in the period during which muscle glucose uptake increased, supporting the possible involvement of the sympathetic nervous system in the non-insulin mediated neural control system of muscle glucose uptake. |
