| Abstract | W irhin rhe educarional, philosophical, scienrific, and socioJogicallirerarure, much discussion-somerimes conflicring and ofren esoreric-occurs abour rhe essence of knowledge and rhe narure of scholarship. One recurrenr meme rhar emerges is a disjuncrion berween rhe academic world and rhe world of pracrice. Evidence of rhis disjuncrion also occurs in casual discourse rhar invokes sharp disrincrions wirh rhe use of such jargon as the academy and the real world. The disjuncrion suggesrs a rwo-sided arrogance. Sr. Exupery (194311971) portrayed one side of this arrogance in rhe following fictional exchange: A little prince travelled through space to land on a planer whose sole inhabitanr was an older man. Conversation began with the man's offer thar he was a geographer and soon progressed ro rhis clarification: "A geographer is a scholar who knows rhe locarion of all rhe seas, rivers, towns, mounrains, and deserrs" (p. (2). The prince, silently musing rhar he had finally mer someone wirh a real profession, plied me geographer wirh questions about the planer. The man had no answers. Dismayed, the little prince exclaimed, "Bur you are a geographer!" To which me man replied, "Exacrly... but I am nor an explorer.... Ir is nor rhe geographer who goes our to counr rhe towns, rhe rivers, the mounrains, the seas, me oceans, the deserts. The geographer is much too imporrant to go loafing abour. He does nor leave his desk" (pp. 63-(4). This characrer inrimared rhar rhe scholar's work among his books is importanr and rhar rrue Suzanne 1V1. Peloquin, Beatriz C. Abreu |
