| Abstract | In the irrigated area of the Office du Niger in Mali, the small size of plots allotted to family farmers is a major cause of poverty. This paper analyzes the minimum areas for economic viability of the farms, according to their level of equipment, combination of crops, and family size. A comprehensive survey of 380 farm managers and some of their family members produced detailed technical, economic and demographic information on farms and families. This data makes it possible to distinguish 12 categories of farming systems and 6 family types, to calculate and model family farm incomes, and to compare these incomes with the minimum consumption needs of the farming families. In turn, 72 minimum areas have been determined, and the results have been tested using various hypotheses regarding rice yields and prices. The results show that the calculated minimum areas ensuring viability are much larger than the areas currently allotted to family farms. |
